Mike Patrick and Britney Spears?

Can anyone who watched UGA/Bama Saturday night please tell me why Mike Patrick decided to bring up Britney Spears in overtime of the game? That has to rank as one of the most random non sequiturs in history. It literally left Todd Blackledge dumbfounded before he could muster "Why do we care?"

Check it out if you haven't seen it...

The reference to Britney Spears was absolutely intended as a random non sequitor. I actually chuckled when he said it.

Being dead, I figured you would have "gotten it".

Chuckling or bewilderment are about the only two feasible reactions for that comment.

Yeah, as someone with a weird sense of humor I winced when he said it, and again when I read his comments in USA Today.

I'm all for avant garde humor but I think the lesson to be drawn is that it depends highly on rapport with the straight man. If Blackledge had known what he was up to, all sorts of deadpan comeback lines might have turned out hilarious.

That was the funniest part to me. Not that Patrick said it, but listening to Blackledge try and figure out "Britney WHO?!?"
